Important Furnace Repair Tips for Your Home

Are you having trouble with your furnace? Winter is right around the corner here in western Canada, so you need to be prepared to tackle any problems in case your furnace goes out on you.

Some problems should only be dealt with by a professional, but some repairs can be done quickly without one. If you are having difficulty with your furnace, we’ve got you covered because in this article we are giving you the top furnace repair tips that may help you out.

Check if There’s Power and Replace Blown Fuses

If your heating unit does not work at all and you hear no noises, or a fan running, check to see if the unit is receiving power. If there happened to be a power surge, a breaker could trip, which needs to be reset.

Some models have a breaker switch on the actual unit. Depending on which model you have, check to see if there is a breaker on the unit that needs to be reset as well as the main electrical breaker box in your home.

You’ll also need to check if any fuses have blown. If so, simply replace them, and that should get you back up and running.

Reset the Unit

One of the basic gas furnace repair tips is to simply do a unit reset. Many furnaces have a RESET button or switch near the motor housing. If your unit has this, turn the furnace off and wait 30 minutes to let the motor cool down.  After 30 minutes, press the RESET and see if it functions normally.

Repeat this step one more time to see if it resolves the problem. If the unit doesn’t function normally after resetting a few times, you’ll need to call in a professional to fix the problem.

Check the Fuel

Sometimes a furnace isn’t working because the fuel it uses doesn’t get to the furnace to function properly. If you have a gas furnace, make sure to check all your gas connections are open, and the pilot light is lit.

If your furnace uses oil, make sure there is a good supply of oil.

Preventative Maintenance

To make sure your furnace is in good working order, here are some things you need to do to make sure your furnace doesn’t go out anytime soon.

Schedule Yearly Inspections

It’s important to schedule an inspection with McMullen’s Refrigeration & Heating to make sure your furnace is in good working order. They will make sure everything with your furnace is working correctly and give you a detailed report if there are any problems.

Change Filters

Changing your filters will keep your furnace working efficiently.  A furnace running with clogged filters can cause some severe damage to the unit and make your furnace work harder.

Clean Your Vent Covers

Over time, vents and vent covers can become clogged with dust and dander. Make sure to remove your vent covers, clean them, and remove any debris that could block the flow of air.
