Plumbing Emergency? Here’s What to Do

Do you know what to do if you have a plumbing emergency in your home? Stay calm and follow these steps.

Turn off the Water

In a plumbing emergency where water is flowing, like in the case of a burst pipe or major leak, turn off your water main as quickly as you can. This could save you a lot of water damage and costly repairs.

Before an emergency strikes, make sure you know where your home’s water main is and how to shut it off. If you need tools to access your water main, it is a good idea to keep those tools close by and handy so that when an emergency strikes you don’t waste precious time wondering where you put that darn wrench.

Call an Emergency Plumber

As soon as you can, call a reputable emergency plumber. The sooner you call, the sooner they’ll be able to come and fix the problem. We know how much a severe plumbing problem can throw off your life, which is why McMullen’s provides priority service to those experiencing a plumbing emergency. Clean Up What You Can

If your plumbing emergency has already left a mess behind, such as a pool of water on the floor, do your best to clean up as much as possible. Sop up water with old towels and a mop and put a bucket in place to collect dripping water if needed. You’ll be happy you did this later–it could save you some serious water damage. In some cases, there’s not really anything you can do in terms of cleaning up in the midst of a plumbing emergency, so just do whatever you can and try not to stress about it too much.

Keep Kids & Pets Out

If you have little ones or furry friends, they could hurt themselves or make the problem worse in a plumbing emergency. Try to secure the area where the damage is and keep them away. For example, if you have a burst pipe in the basement, shut the door to the basement or block off the stairs with a baby gate or piece of furniture if there is no door. If you can’t block off the area, be sure to closely monitor any small children or pets to ensure they don’t get too close to the damaged area.

Don’t hesitate to call us when you have a plumbing emergency or if you just need some routine maintenance done.
